Spring Cleaning Your Water Well

June 12, 2025

As the weather warms up and the seasons change, spring is the ideal time to clean and inspect your water well system. Winter weather, freezing temperatures, and reduced usage can leave your well components in need of attention. A thorough spring cleaning helps ensure your water stays clean, your pump runs efficiently, and small problems are caught before they become expensive failures.

Inspect the Wellhead and Surrounding Area

Start with a visual inspection of your wellhead. Check that the well cap is securely fastened and free from cracks or damage. Clear away any accumulated leaves, debris, or vegetation that could trap moisture against the casing or block ventilation. Ensure the ground around the well slopes away so that rainwater drains away from—not toward—the wellhead. If you notice any erosion that has lowered the soil level around your casing, add fill dirt to restore proper drainage.

Flush the System

Over winter, sediment and stagnant water can accumulate in your pressure tank and plumbing lines. Flushing the system by running outdoor faucets and fixtures at full flow for 30 to 60 minutes helps clear out debris and refreshes the water in your tank. If your water appears cloudy or has an unusual odor after the first few minutes of flushing, continue until it runs clear. Persistent cloudiness may indicate a need for water testing or filter maintenance.

Service the Pressure Switch and Electrical Components

Spring is the perfect time to clean your pressure switch. Remove the cover and gently clear out any spider webs, ant nests, or debris that may have accumulated over the winter. Inspect the electrical connections in your control box for corrosion or looseness. Check that your pressure tank's air charge is correct by tapping the tank—it should sound hollow at the top and solid at the bottom. If the entire tank sounds solid, the bladder may be waterlogged and need replacement.

Schedule Your Annual Water Test

If you haven't tested your water in the past year, spring is the ideal time. Seasonal changes in groundwater chemistry, spring rains, and agricultural activity can affect water quality. At minimum, test for bacteria, nitrates, pH, and total dissolved solids. If your water has a history of iron, sulfur, or hardness issues, include those in your spring test as well. Annual testing is the best way to catch changes early and address them before they affect your health or plumbing.
